The Steering Gear Assembly — commonly referred to as  (zhuǎn xiàng jī), steering rack, or direction machine — is the core component of the vehicle‘s steering system. Mounted transversely between the front suspension subframe, this electromechanical assembly is responsible for converting the rotational motion of the steering wheel into linear motion that steers the front wheels. The steering gear, together with the steering wheel, steering column, tie rods, and knuckles, constitutes the complete steering system [6†L4-L5].

A high-quality steering gear must perform reliably across a wide range of operating conditions:

  • Directional Control — The steering gear converts steering wheel rotation into lateral movement of the rack, transmitting force through the tie rods to the steering knuckles, causing the front wheels to turn left or right, thereby controlling the vehicle‘s direction.

  • Force Amplification (Power Assist) — Modern vehicles utilize power steering (electric or hydraulic) to amplify the driver’s steering input force, significantly reducing the effort required to turn the wheels.
